Domestic Violence / Violência Doméstica

Hundreds of thousands of women (and their children) suffer some kind of abuse at home in Canada and Brazil. Most domestic violence does not happen all the time. It takes the form of a cycle that moves faster each time it goes around.

The cycle: Build-up, Act-up, Rationalize, Pretend Normal

These are the kinds of abuse:

Emotional: Any behaviour that is intended to hurt, threaten, humiliate the spouse
Physical: Unwanted physical contact that might/might not result in visible injury
Economic: Behaviour that prevents the victim from being financially independent
Spiritual: The abuser does not allow the victim to practice her faith and is ridiculed
Sexual: Forced sexual activity of any kind

If you or anyone you love are going through this situation, call the emergency shelter or the police (911) for help http://www.calgarywomensshelter.com/
http://www.calgarypolice.ca/sectionsandunits.html#domestic

Soliciting a Hooker - Now Illegal in Fresno, California / Abordar Prostitutas - Agora é Ilegal em Fresno, California

Operation Reveal in Fresno, California, hopes to slow the growing prostitution trade in the area. Men soliciting a prostitute will have their pictures taken and listed on a city of Fresno website for the public to see for 15 days. Read more on http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/local&id=8276677

A similar approach in Oslo, Norway, has shown encouraging results. Those who try to buy sex in the city can face up to six months in jail, although most will end up paying a fine of up to US$ 1,500. Norway is the latest European nations that have criminalized paying for sex. In Finland it has been illegal to buy sex from a woman who is trafficked or pimped, and in Sweden the ban has been in effect since 1999.

People are not merchandise. A prostitute should never be exploited as a consumer product even if it her own decision to do so. Be human and treat humans as such!

A Noruega é o último país europeu a criminalizar o sexo pago.

Non-Muslim Women May Soon Be Used as Sex Slaves in Kuwait / Mulheres não-mulçumanas podem, em breve, serem usadas como escravas sexuais no Kuwait

A new law may soon be passed in Kuwait - non-Muslim women who are in prison in this country may be used as sex slaves. Even worse than this bill is the fact that a woman  is proposing the law - according to Salwa al-Mutairi, Islamic activist and TV personality, using an "imported" sexual slave actually promotes harmony at the client's home since he "can be devoted to his own wife, avoiding being seduce by adultery". Kuwait is also in favor of importing war prisoner to work as sex slaves in the country.

The idea is based on the example of a powerful Muslim leader (18th century), Haroun al-Rashid, who had 2,000 concubines.

Homens Acusados de Estupro Coletivo São Inocentados / Collective Rapists Are Declared Not Guilty

Collective Rapists Are Declared Not Guilty
The Supreme Court of Pakistan declared innocent five men of a group of six who were accused of collectively raping a woman. A Council of Elders of the village where they lived ordered the rape.
The case took place in 2002 in the province of Punjab, east of Pakistan. The victim is an illiterate woman who was punished because her 12 year brother supposedly had an affair with a woman from a powerful clan, therefore bringing shame to the clan. The victim, as well as her family, are still under life threat.

Thousands of Women and Christians Killed in Conflicts in Ivory Coast / Milhares de Mulheres e Cristãos Assassinados em Conflitos na Costa do Marfim

It is interesting that the media and the average people in developed countries couldn't care less about the massacre in Ivory Coast. The population of the country has no value at all in the world's economic therefore we don't see any actions being taken to help the country. The world is more interested in conflicts in Libia because of the oil. The lesson: oil is way more important than people.

Bamboo Inn in Recife, Brazil: Sexual Tourism Center
After the murder of a Brazilian engineer, whose body was found in Bamboo Bar in the city of Recife, the Federal Police finds out that Bamboo Bar and Inn are, in fact, a center for sexual tourism. The Inn is run by Germans and Austrians, one of them, Alfred Hartner, is accused of having murdered the Brazilian engineer, Alisson Pereira.
In the city of Cologne, 200km from Frankfurt, there is a travel agency which sells tour packages to Recife, and the clients are sent to Bamboo Inn. A package costs around 1,593 euro and it includes round-trip tickets and eight days in the inn. The inn is recommended on its website for “open-minded people and singles who want to enjoy the typical Brazilian nightlife and various other offers of this city which never sleeps.”
The clients at the inn are hosted by prostitutes in its bar. The bar leads to the bedrooms with only a glass door separating these two. All the clients have a key to the door so that they do not have to go through the reception area of the inn.
Some prostitutes are under age, but their documents are forged by the manager of the inn, Hans Hermman. According to the City of Recife authorities, the inn has no license to operate. The owners have already been told to apply for a license, but they haven’t so far.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Brazil has already signed an agreement with Spain, Portugal and Italy to fight sexual tourism, but there is still a lot to be done.
“Whoever comes to Brazil with this goal in mind, of sexual exploitation, is not a tourist. These are criminals and they will be treated accordingly. I hope Brazil understands the problem and is compelled to protect our children and teenagers, to protect the Brazilian family”, says the national secretary of Tourism Policies, Isabel Mesquita.

Autor de Guia para Pedófilos é Condenado / Author of a Guide for Pedophilia is Sentenced

Author of a Guide for Pedophilia is Sentenced
Phillip Greaves is what we could call a monster. He wrote The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct. His readers are also monsters, criminals who destroy childhood. Greaves was arrested and sentenced but did not refute the accusation of releasing obscene material involving children. As he was not accused of molesting children, Greaves will not be on the list of sexual offender in the USA.
In this book, Phillip Greaves argues that pedophiles are not understood, and offers practical tips on how to practice pedophilia in a “lawful” way. An electronic version of the book was being sold on Amazon, creating uproar, but it was boycotted.

One of the Most Dangerous Places in the World: The Family / Um dos Lugares Mais Perigosos do Mundo: A Família

Um dos Lugares Mais Violentos do Mundo:  A Família

Neste blog temos discutido a violência contra crianças e mulheres no mundo afora.

One of the World’s Most Violent Places: The Family

On this blog we have discussed violence against children and women worldwide. These are horrendous stories, and it is hard to believe people are so sophisticated in being evil. However, we forget a simple detail: the family is one of the world’s most violent places. According to experts, the family is one of the most hostile places in our society after war and street violence.

Statistics may not be necessary because every day we see the destruction of the family. Marriages ending in divorce, children being abandoned by one of the parents or both, babies being dumped in garbage bins, children being brought up with no boundaries or healthy guidance, domestic violence of all kinds (verbal abuse is also considered domestic violence!), alcohol, drugs, depression, suicide and other kinds of violence which are less evident such as lying, pornography, lack of dialog and affection. The family is no longer our safe
haven, place of affection, place where we go to when the world is falling apart.

Commitment has vanished and, in us, there is only the desire for satisfying ourselves even if the price for this is our own family. Perhaps we do not sell our children to a brothel or cocoa plantation, but we do not bring them up to become integral human beings. We do not want the responsibility or commitment involved in bringing up children. Perhaps the spouse does not suffer physical violence at home, but he or she may suffer
from lonely and lack of understanding.

This violence in the family is generated by people’s lack of substance and by superficial existence. Our greatest goal is to be “a good and honest egg”, as stated by the great Christian writer and scholar, C.S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia. “A good and honest egg” is all shell. This egg is only a great thing when is hatched and generates a bird that will soar high.

People of substance and depth are in danger of extinction – people who fight, love their families unconditionally, who pay the price for their families. Weak people run away at the slightest pressure, and think if their circumstance changes, they will have a new reality in a magical way.
What are we doing to change this picture? It is much easier to donate some money with a click of the mouse, which is fair, than to fight to save the family with courage, strength and heart.

Pornography and Sex Trafficking / Pornografia e Tráfico Sexual

Experts estimate that about 12 million people have been sold to sexual labor out of 26 million who have been trafficked into slavery in general. Sex trafficking is taking the lives of millions of children and women. Boys, girls and women are being recruited into the pornography industry and kept there by means of coercion or physical force.

A home computer is a potential red light district with the increase in online pornography use, which, in turn, helps stimulate the demand for both adult and child sex victims. Online pornography users reported greater participation in the sex industry than did non-customers – they are more likely to buy sexually explicit videos or magazines.  Once hooked, pornography users enter into the escalation mode – they look for heavier material until they start acting out what they see.

Tanzanian Girls Risk Rape to Go to School / Meninas na Tanzânia Correm Risco de Estupro para Irem à Escola

In rural parts of Tanzania, girls who want to finish their education have to risk being raped to go to school.  Some have to walk up to 10 km a day to get to school. To avoid the situation, girls rent cramped huts in cities where the schools are located. These huts, or ghettos, are cheap, but have no water or electricity. The doors and walls barely protect them from harassment, but they have no other alternative. Men invade these huts and rape the girls, who think it is useless to cry for help – people hardly come to help.
These girls who live in huts try not to fall asleep at night by fear of being attacked. Therefore, they usually fall asleep during class. Some non-governmental organizations are trying to tackle the problem.

The Female Body as Weapon of War /O Corpo Feminino como Arma de Guerra

Rape in some parts of the world is an acceptable practice. It is used as a powerful weapon in some countries in Africa. Militias discovered that rape is the most effective way to terrorize civilian population. The United Nations declared that rape is a “weapon of war”, especially in Congo.  The U.N. estimates that ¾ of women in some areas in Congo had been raped.

Victims as young as 3-years old are raped with sticks or knives. Soldiers, who sometimes are children themselves, declare that it is their right to rape women. In raping their victims, these men tear the women inside causing a fistula. A fistula is a hole in the tissues, and the injure results in urine and feces trickle through their vagina. A fistula is also caused by early childbearing and lack of pre-natal care.

Honour Killing
Honour killing is another major issue which affects women, mostly in Western Asia, North Africa and parts of South Asia. This kind of crime is committed when a family, clan or community believes one of their members did something that brought shame to them. Women are particularly affected as their sexual purity is more valuable than their own lives.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, there are about 5,000 honour killings a year, almost all in Muslim countries. Many honour killings are disguised as suicide or accident, so the estimate seems low.

Watch the video below and see for yourself what honour killing looks like. It shows the stoning of Du’a Aswad, a 17-year old Kurdish girl who lived in Iraq.

Sexual Exploitation of Children in Brazil / Exploração Sexual Infantil no Brasil

Sexual Expoitation of Children in Brazil
Brazil isn’t a safe place for children. In addition to all sorts of social problems such as lack of education, health care and adequate food and water, millions of children in Brazil are easy prey for sexual exploitation. The Federal Police Department in charge of the road system in Brazil identified 1,820 points of sexual exploitation of children on major roads and highways. The Northeast region of Brazil is the shameful leader of sexual exploitation of children in the country.
However, the predators of children aren’t local men only. They come from everywhere, especially European countries. Some travel agencies in these countries offer this “service”. Brazil and Thailand are the favourite spots for sexual tourists; they pay as little as US$ 7 for sex with a children. The girls have about 10 clients a night. Law enforcement officials raid brothels and arrest the owners, but it is more difficult to control this activity in the streets of big cities.

Sex Trafficking
The market of rape for profit is the second largest illegal enterprise in the world - it ties with the illegal arms industry, after drug dealing. According to the United Nations, the total market value of this illicit trade is $32 billion dollars. Annually, about 800,000 human beings are trafficked across international borders, and thousands of others are abused within their own countries. 80% of the human trafficking victims are women, and 50% of them are minors. As long as it remains profitable, human traffic will not end. And it will remain profitable as long as there is demand for it. The customer can be anyone, even you as you access pornography in the safety and comfort of your home from your lap top.

Where it all began / Onde tudo começou

Where it all began – why I am passionate about this cause
I live in Canada, a country of abundance and social freedom, but I was born in Brazil and spent most of my life there. I can consider myself a privileged person because I never knew what poverty was. I mean, I’ve also had food, water, clothing and shelter. However, in Brazil it is not unusual for middle class people to rub shoulder with those who have nothing on a daily basis.
I grew up in the 70’s, the age of the Brazilian Miracle, when the economy was booming and the middle class lived a wealthy life. At home, we had three hired hand: two ladies, one to cook and the other to do the cleaning, and a young boy, Sebastião, who took care of the garden, ran errands and walked the dog.  You have to understand that, in developing countries, when there is an economic boom, the rich become richer and the poor, poorer. That was the situation at home.
When I was in grade 5, I realized that I could read and write, but other people like our hired hands couldn’t. The ladies who worked for us had never been to school. So, I made a decision – I was going to use the books I had from grade 1 and teach our maids to read and write. After all, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I started helping them write and read their first letters using the garage of my house as a classroom. From that point on, I’ve always  had the desire to teach others, especially the ones with no privileges in life.
I went to university and graduated with a degree in Linguistics/Education. After that, I started teaching English as a Foreign Language. I liked what I did, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled and accomplished. A few years later, with the help of a couple of friends, we started a literacy program in a church in São Paulo. That was what I call bliss. We helped dozens of men and women to read and write, and we also educated the women on women’s health issues. What an amazing experience.
A few years later, I moved to another city, and started the same program in another church, where I also had the privilege to see tears in my students’ eyes when they were able to read and understand a simple paragraph. That’s how powerful education is.
My life had a few turns, and my family and I moved to Canada. As soon as I arrived, I got a job in a major college in the city of Calgary where I’ve been teaching immigrants and refugees English as a second language. Most immigrants who come to Canada are people who were privileged enough in their countries to be able to apply for permanent resident status here. They need education and work experience. Most refugees, however, had little or no schooling in their countries of origin. Some of them lived all their lives in refugee camps in Africa, for example. At any rate, the best thing about this job is to be able to listen to people’s stories. I dare say I learn more from my students than my students learn from me. This experience has widened my view of the world, and made me realize how small I am and how unfair life can be. There is a great danger in taking for granted what we have – we tend to forget that a big portion of the world live in sub-human condition. Chimamanda Adichie, a Nigerian writer, warns us of the danger of a single story. She says that we sometimes create stereotypes of people just because we start “reading” people’s stories from the middle and not from the real beginning. There is a danger in thinking that because some many women live in oppression, they are not able to make huge changes in our society.  I would like to share some stories of survivors, and hope you feel the urge to support them however you can.

Posso me considerar uma pessoa privilegiada porque nunca conheci a pobreza. Quero dizer, sempre tive comida, água, roupa e moradia.

The Current Situation / A Situação Atual

(Versão em Português no fim do texto)

The current situation - missing women
Amartya Sen, Nobel-Prize winning economist and professor of Economics at Harvard University, says that about 107 million females are missing from our planet. These missing women were killed because of discrimination. Many were killed even before being born. Those who did survive suffer all kinds of violence: gang rape, genital mutilation, slavery, domestic violence, imposed prostitution, starvation. They have no voice, not because they are unable to express themselves, but because their voices have been muffled by men, their own culture or our own “enlightened” culture that can hear the voices of other women who influence our lives and can be found on the cover of magazines, but have, in many cases, nothing to contribute to society. Even if these suffering women’s voices were not muffled, even if their screams were loud and clear, not many people would be willing to pay attention to them.
In starting this blog, my desire is that I can amplify their voices a bit. As Sheryl WuDunn would say: “In the game of life, we won the lottery.” My readers, as well as myself, would probably live an abundant life – we have access to potable water, three meals a day, what to wear and where to live. Therefore, we have social  responsibility to denounce that millions of women are being wiped out of the planet simple because they are women. Help me spread the word and let’s share ideas about what we, as global citizens, can do to join the efforts to save the women.

A situação atual – mulheres desaparecidas
