The current situation - missing women

Amartya Sen, Nobel-Prize winning economist and professor of Economics at Harvard University, says that about 107 million females are missing from our planet. These missing women were killed because of discrimination. Many were killed even before being born. Those who did survive suffer all kinds of violence: gang rape, genital mutilation, slavery, domestic violence, imposed prostitution, starvation. They have no voice, not because they are unable to express themselves, but because their voices have been muffled by men, their own culture or our own “enlightened” culture that can hear the voices of other women who influence our lives and can be found on the cover of magazines, but have, in many cases, nothing to contribute to society. Even if these suffering women’s voices were not muffled, even if their screams were loud and clear, not many people would be willing to pay attention to them.

In starting this blog, my desire is that I can amplify their voices a bit. As Sheryl WuDunn would say: “In the game of life, we won the lottery.” My readers, as well as myself, would probably live an abundant life – we have access to potable water, three meals a day, what to wear and where to live. Therefore, we have social  responsibility to denounce that millions of women are being wiped out of the planet simple because they are women. Help me spread the word and let’s share ideas about what we, as global citizens, can do to join the efforts to save the women.

A situação atual – mulheres desaparecidas

O ganhador do Prêmio Nobel e professor de Economia da Universidade de Harvard, Amartya Sen, diz que em torno de 107 milhões de mulheres estão desaparecidas do nosso planeta. Essas mulheres desaparecidas foram mortas por causa de discriminação. Muitas foram mortas antes mesmo de nascerem. As que sobreviveram sofrem todo tipo de violência: estupro em grupo, mutilação genital, escravidão, violência doméstica, prostituição imposta, fome. Elas não tem voz, não porque não consigam se expressar, mas porque suas vozes são abafadas por homens, suas próprias culturas ou a nossa cultura “esclarecida” que ouve as vozes de outras mulheres que influenciam nossa vida e que aparecem em capa de revista, mas que, muitas vezes, não tem o contribuir com a sociedade. Mesmo que a voz das mulheres que sofrem não fosse abafada, mesmo que seus gritos fossem altos e claros, não muita gente estaria disposta a prestar atenção nelas.

Com este blog, meu desejo é o de amplificar as vozes dessas mulheres, pelo menos um pouquinho. Como diria Shery WuDunn: “No jogo da vida, ganhamos na loteria.” Meus leitores, assim como eu mesma, provavelmente vive uma vida de abundância – temos acesso à água potável, três refeições diárias, roupas e moradia. Assim, temos a responsabilidade social de denunciar que mihões de mulheres estão sendo aniquiladas do planet simplesmente porque são mulheres. Ajude-me espalhar a notícia e vamos compartilhar ideias de como nós, cidadãos globais, podemos juntar as forças para salvar as mulheres.
